Stargazing LIVE (Brian Cox and Dara O Briain present the show on BBC Two) is returning to BBC Two on the 16th-18th of January 2012. In 2011 the series was a huge success. Almost four million people watched the first series on BBC Two and more than 40,000 attended accompanying Stargazing LIVE events and were inspired to explore the night sky.
The Stargazing team are joining forces with Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire and BBC Radios 1Xtra and 6Music to offer an exciting musical opportunity. The Lovell Radio Telescope is used to listen to and record radio waves from space, including the rhythmic sounds of pulsars – some of the most distant objects in the universe.
The challenge is to work with musicians from the BBC Orchestras and electronic music producer Hostage to create a music track inspired by these sounds from space.
Participants will get a chance to visit Jodrell Bank for the day on 7th Dec, see the telescope first hand and record some sounds from deep space to use in their track.
They will then take part in a one day workshop week commencing 13th December 2011 at BBC Lab in Glasgow working with musicians from the BBC Orchestra electronic music producer ‘Hostage’ to help create their space music!
We will then showcase the music on the Stargazing LIVE website and be looking for further opportunities with our broadcast partners Radio’s 1Xtra and 6music.
