REVIEW: Plaid – Scintilli

‘Scintilli’ is pretty mixed.  In styles, dynamics, soundscapes, instrumentation it changes throughout.

I had it on the background, and then 20 minutes later I suddenly remembered that it was on and released that I was really enjoying it.  That sounds like a backhanded compliment, but if I dislike something it sticks out like a sore thumb and I can’t do anything to avoid it, so it gets turned off.  Plaid had lulled me into a comfortable, warm soundscape and then suddenly morphed (particularly the transition from ‘craft nine’ to ‘sömnl’) tearing through the air and demanding my attention.  Just as soon as it comes, it fades again, melting in to the blissfully swirling ‘founded’.

‘Scintilli’ feels somewhat alive; drum patterns and time signatures oscillating, even just for the briefest moment.  It’s one of the those cases that it has been put together, not being weird for weird’s sake, but everything is considered and all works together.  It may be strange, but that brings a certain majesty to it, something that has to be worked at a little to enjoy and it really tends to be the ones that grow on you are the ones that last.  As John Darko from Digital Audio News put it: “Audiophile wankers that dig electronic with love it.  I am and I do.”  However, I do think it can be enjoyed outside of the “Audiophile” bracket; there are moments of sheer beauty, straight-up house groove and gritty bass, what’s not to like?
