Despite having only been producing for a little under two years, Birmingham based youngster Vodex has already been causing quite a stir in the world of dubstep, with big releases on HENCH and Bassclash under his belt. And with more on the way on HENCH and Sin City, Vodex is no doubt one to keep your eye on!
Vodex is going head to head with one of the stalwarts of the scene Eddie K at the HENCH Takeover at Cable on Sept 21st, and in the run up to the event took some time out from the studio to put together this big bastard of a mix for us, featuring tracks from the likes Jakes, Lost, Dismantle, as well as some new bits of his own! Plus we caught up with Vodex for a chat about his influences, the Birmingham scene, and the mighty HENCH records…
Vodex, what’s been keeping you busy lately?
Music music music! Its been a hectic past few months for me and I’m lovin every second of it! Currently I’m working on some new tracks that can be put out on HENCH aswell as playing quite a lot of shows every weekend! So yeah quite alot of stuff going on at the moment.

Tell us a bit about your mix…
The mix has every type of music in there I love to play out! I always keep my sets energetic…you know keep the crowd moving. Quite abit of fresh material in there from some huge artists, aswell as some new stuff from myself!
Tell us about your musical background, how did you first get into electronic music and dubstep?
Ive always been a huge fan of every genre of music. My mom and dad love their music as well so from young age I would always listen to their CDs and stuff. Then in high school I got into 4×4, grime, bassline and started messing about mixing on VDJ. Shortly after a friend of mine played a dubstep remix of a track on his phone to me and I instantly got hooked. Started to search for the genre and artists online and the more and more I heard, the more I started to love it!
In terms of your own musical style who have been your biggest influences?
Honestly I would say HENCH have been my biggest influences. Even before I was producing I used to really look forward to when the next release was coming and they just seem to get better and better! So yeah I’ve always respected every HENCH artist a lot. I’m very happy I can be a part of it now and hope I can influence people the same way they did for me!
How have your tastes changed over time?
I would say in some ways they have, but I’ve always been into the tearout stuff more than anything so when I started producing it just felt really natural and I knew the sounds I was looking for!
You got big support early on from the likes of Coki and Hatcha, as an upcoming producer, what’s it like to first hear your tunes getting played by the biggest DJs around?
Absolutely amazing! I remember speaking to Hatch on the phone about 9 months after I started producing and sending him some beats and it seemed very surreal! But yeah hearing artists like Coki and Hatcha playing my tracks for the first time was an amazing feeling because it made me think I must be doing something right haha!
Vodex Ft Koast – Rabbit Hole (W.I.P) by Vodex
What’s the scene like in Birmingham at the moment?
Birmingham has so much potential and there are so many upcoming artists trying to break through. There aren’t many dubstep nights here like there used to be anymore I think the people prefer the more garagey, UK bass kind of stuff but i hope to influence the youth here so we can get the scene bigger and bigger!
What does the rest of 2012 have in store for Vodex?
Just more releases and shows I hope! I’m gonna be working on a lot of new tracks over the next few months so we can get my first solo release out there on HENCH. But yeah a lot of new stuff on the way so make sure you stay locked!
What 3 tracks sum you up best?
Hmm thats a tough one! I dont think I could say which tracks sum me up best but I will give you 3 tracks that are some of my favourite of all time!
1. Jakes & Joker – 3k lane
2. Coki – Tree Trunk
3. Eddie k & Minus FT Beezy – Serial Killer
If you could put on your dream party, where would it be, who would play, and would there be a theme?
Man there’s so many I would love! But I would have to say a HENCH takeover tour in the USA would be amazing! No theme just straight dubsteppin!
You’ve been doing your fair share of collaborations recently, but who would be your dream artist to collaborate with?
Hmm there is two names that come to mind straight away…Jakes & Coki. Dons in the scene! Also I would love to work with Redlight. Definitely one of my fave artists!
And finally, what can we expect from your set at Chew The Fat’s HENCH records takeover at Cable in September?
Expect energy, hypeness and alot of HENCH noises! Muhahaha.
