The Fat! Club Mix 027 – 5kinandbone5 by Fat! Records
The latest in the Fat! Club mix series comes from 5kin&bone5, recent signings to Sinden’s Grizzly label. We had an exclusive little catch up with the pair as they prepare to release their debut EP, ‘Stomp // Pop Painkillers featuring YG & TYS’ and asked them the questions that matter. They talk smoothies, ‘bass-hop’ Pelvic Thrust and their cache of bangers.
How did you guys meet?
We met at a massive rave under the influence of copious psychedelics and made a lifelong pact to create some of the most futuristic shit…forever.
How did you come up with the name ’5kinandbone5′? Were you called something else before?
5kin is the white boy and Bone5 is the black boy. It’s a long ass complicated story we’ll discuss later at some point. We have always gone by 5kinAndBone5 though.
What’s it like being signed to a record label in the U.K but living all the way in California?
Fucking fabulous. We have long held the U.K. in high regard for pushing the limits of underground electronic music. Tracking the percolating whirlpool of UK club music has triggered many an analytical discussion and provides endless sonic inspiration. Our fascination with the unique sound design and rhythms that have evolved there as a result of colonialism, caribbean and asian (indian) musical influence, studio technology and pirate radio will never cease. Needless to say we are terribly stoked.
How did you get involved with Sinden? Did he call you, what happened?
Funny enough it all transpired from a lone Facebook message. He was thrilled about the YG tunes and surprised that they had not been officially released. As things unfolded we realized our involvement with him wasn’t merely going to be the Grizzly release and subsequently ended up in the studio with him at Different Fur (San Francisco) going on a rampage knocking out like 10 joints in a 48 hour time period. Sinden has an impeccable work ethic and an appetite for disparate genre exploration so it’s been a blast working with him. We are sitting on a cache of bangers–we brewed up some stuff that sounds like Timbaland with a UK twist and something reminiscent of Fis-T with a hood USA flavor.
What and who has been your main influences behind your debut EP?!
The realness and honesty of Ty$ and YG because without them this shit wouldn’t be anything. They represent a new wave in west coast rap / R&B. It goes without saying the talent of these OG motherfuckers Bernie Worrell & Fred Wesley also played an integral part for the magic behind Pop Painkillaz. The juxtaposition of contemporary young artists next to their forefathers was one of the driving forces as Bernie and Fred had crucial ass roles in the sounds that have been sampled to pave the way for modern day hip hop.
“Stomp” is an interesting tune because some of the synths are techno and grime inspired; definitely not what you would ordinarily hear in US rap production. Some have called it “Bass-hop” which we are not mad at one bit. The use of the breakbeat in it also helps evoke a sense of old gangster rap era aesthetics which fits perfectly seeing as how YG and his crew Pu$haz Ink are in essence, modern day analogs of NWA.
So that being said there was attention paid to not just the hybridization of genres but the elimination of a timeline as it pertains to musical history. Transcendance of temporal limitations, if you will.
What is your favourite organic food product?
Organic fruit moothies all day.
You are so versatile and have your fingers in the door of many different genre’s. If you had to, what genre would you class your self as?!
Wu-Wei and/or Pelvic Thrust.
Are there any particular artists that you are really feeling at this moment in time?
Maxsta, Cocteau Twins, Terror Danjah, MJ Cole, Scrufizza, YG & TY$, Kevin Shields, Wheez-ie, DJ Mustard, Jay Nari, J-Hawk, Distal, Brenmar, RiFF RAFF SODMG, Sinden, Amen Brother, Surfer Blood, Calvin Harris, Buraka Som Sistema, Toddla T, Prince, Kate Bush, CanBlaster, 30 Seconds to Mars,
Any artists to look out for in 2012?
Taar 88, Cedaa, Rizzla DJ, Dark Ages, Vin Sol
What has the rest of 2011 got in store for you and what are your plans for 2012?
2011? We have a release via Fool’s Gold Records soon of the Kid Sister & Riff Raff joint “Hide N’ Seek” we co-produced with Sinden. In addition to that we recently did a joint with grime artists Nu Brand that Sinden collaborated on as well. There has been no lack of work to keep us busy. Expect some real dark UK funky meets Detroit techno shit on the way with the homie Distal. Oh and Mishka is putting out a remix we did for Babe Rainbow next month. So there’s that stuff going on.
As far as 2012 is concerned we have another collaborative effort with Sinden slated for release on Terror Danjah’s Hardrive imprint which we are obvs mondo stoked about. Brothaz also have been talking with Kastle and Brenmar about working on some stuff which should definitely turn out dope.
Other than that we ummmmmm…look forward to spinning at some wild ass parties and turning them shits the fuck out
