And the July warm-up DJ competition winner is…

    Last Japan

    Last Japan

Last Japan – Sounds of the Summer (MediaFire)

    Last Japan.

It’s a fact that to succeed as a DJ there days, you need to produce your own tunes to stand out from from the pack. Almost as important is a t-shirt with your own name on in massive print (nobody makes any money from selling music these days so think ‘merchandising’ and ‘potential Mixmag fashion shoot’ right from the start).

Last Japan ticks both these boxes. Plus he has a pair a pastel coloured pistols pointing straight at our heads.

All this wouldn’t matter if his mix was rubbish of course. But as it covers pretty much everything big, loud and dancefloor that’s currently rocking our stereo, we reckon he’s a future star in the making… Catch him on July 31st.

You can also download a couple of his heavy remixes over at We Are Not A Rock Band including one of the as yet unreleased banger ‘Eurostar’ by Brodinski and Mumdance.

Well done to Last Japan, that’s a quality mixtape.

It’s slightly ironic that his idea of a set to warm up the techno/ electro room for Dyson and D.I.M. contains no more than 5 Foamo tracks/ remixes? Surely he’d be better suited in the Z Shed room?
Maybe CTF! just wanted to avoid paying to book Last Japan who clearly has what it takes to fit the bill for a future date instead of giving the small fry a chance to shine at this one? Ah well.

      Not bitter about losing.
      Promise.

Anyone who plays five Foamo tracks has impeccably good taste by our standards (although I don’t think even Foamo plays that many).

In truth, there were a few really good mixes and perhaps yours was one? Because it was so close, we decided we had to take other things into account.

Hey, its your competition, your rules and your decision. No beef ;)

If I was asking lesser known DJs to submit their mixtapes I’d be looking for fresher talent than someone who’s already getting exposure on Radio 1 and has tracks released on Kitsune and Southern Fried to do a ‘warm up’ set for the main room.

In the end the best man won.

yeah I think somebody with less exposure already should have been picked but its cool Last Japan is pretty dope and this will help his career out for sure

thats a bit of a joke really isnt it…well played to last japan he’s the perfect winner as he’s getting exposure and his career will skyrocket. But, this mix hardly defines him as a dj – this could have been made by anyone who has been looking at blogs over the last month. I would have thought you guys might have received lots of mixes which would have had tracklistings like that. I also thought it was an unwritten rule that you don’t have more than one or two songs by each artist in a mix -thus showing ur extensive song collection. would appreciate ur advice paul / joe because i will probably enter the next one.

Thanks for your comments all appreciated.. I had never heard of Last Japan when he sent the mix through, when I heard it and heard his productions although the mix aint that special, thought he has the whole package.. To find someone like Last Japan in a dj comp is a complete result and very rare… The whole reason for such a comp is to find such a person, it is a talent comp after all and he has the most allround talent. All djs these days are producers, there is almost nearly no way you will make it professionally as a dj unless you are a producer. I was a dj myself but couldnt go any further cos i didnt produce. So with this in mind it was a very easy decision. That said I actually wanted to have anotehr winner as thought we had a couple of very good alternative mixes to choose from, but I simply dont have time at the club to do this. We will do more comps and if we cant find the next big thing which is always the aim we will choose the next best mix so please keep sending them in otherwise we would have no one to choose from… Hope that makes some sense of it.. Hope you can all make it on Friday..

Oh, forgive me I must have got confused with the requirements for the competition. I misunderstood “make us a brilliant, outstanding, original mixtape” and “send us a CD of what you think would make a suitable warm-up” for ’send us a mix that “aint that special” but as long as you can produce and have your own tshirts you’re in with a chance’.

Agreed, you can only take your DJ career further if you produce as well but, some of us just want an excuse to invite all our friends to come see us spin records at a CTF event, hoping we get the crowd pumped up enough to be invited back again. Living the superstar DJ dream but, instead coming second to a guy who could be booked (and paid) to play anytime and fully deserves a proper crowd instead of a hand full of early birds.

Anybody got a copy of Ableton I can have?

who said you were second ;-)

The t-shirt thing was tongue in cheek. Anyone who does a Mixmag probably goes home and showers with all their clothes on. But it is a sad fact nowadays that image is important, video killed the radio star and Simon Cowell is probably to blame for everything. Don’t hate the player, hate the game.
