Jaimie Fanatic – Missy Elliot bootleg and interview
Missy Elliot vs Jaimie Fanatic – We Run This Bootleg (MediaFire)
Last year saw Jaimie Fanatic blow up and 2009 looks set to propel him even further into the big time as he follows his Wearhouse hit, Programmed, with releases on Mad Decent and Southern Fried.
He dropped us this tasty Missy bootleg and chatted to us about his forthcoming album, being Armand Van Helden’s brother-in-law and why nobody can spell his name right.
Can you tell us a little bit about career as a DJ and producer so far.
Well as a kid I started out rapping in a hip-hop posse and producing hip-hop tracks. After many years of partying and doing stupid stuff I got back into doing music in the house scene. Started out DJing and producing techno but after two years I got into our current house scene. I played pretty much all over the world. In Holland for rooms up to 15,000 people (Lowlands, Innercity, Dance Valley) but also internationally from 300 head clubs up till 10,000 head events. Head count doesn’t say much to me nowadays, the most fun I have is in clubs where everybody is feeling that oneness and that happens more in clubs with between 500 and 1500 head count.
We recently featured a video of you with The Party Squad. Who are they? And what’s your connection to Armand Van Helden who popped up for a guest appearance too?
Armand is a fan of my music since a couple of years and I’ve been a fan of his since I can remember. I was married to his sister for a while and the Partysquad are the dudes who actually introduced Armand and me. The Partysquad actually runs most of the hip house industry in Holland so they are a key players in the connection between international pop house artists and Holland.
Your tracks mix in a lot of bmore style breakdowns and you’ve just signed to Mad Decent. How did you hook up with Diplo? And to test your credentials, what the purest altruistic act of kindness you’ve ever performed?
Diplo contacted me after hearing one of my tracks. He liked it and wanted to put it on his blog and release it later. The most what? Ha, ha. Forgive my lack of extensive knowledge of your language. But if you’re asking for the most puristic performance I’ve ever done where I could do my thing without any concessions, then that’s definitely going to be at Dim Mak in LA where I’m playing 26th of May. There are not a lot of spots where you can go all out in your own style. 90% of all the shows all over the world demand for you to do concession. And you know what, it should be like that! People tend to forget that a DJ is there for the people! That’s what we do. Yes, we have our own style but, yes, even more to the fact that not everybody in that room is coming for you, some really are there because they want a night out. And they too deserve a fun night and if that asks of you to sway a little bit left or right to give them what they want, then that’s your job. No matter if you’re the number one DJ in the world or a backroom DJ.
That would definitely be a form of altruism. We also hear that you have an album in the making. Can you let us know what this will be like and who you’re collaborating with.
Yesssss, so excited. See, I never thought my music was good enough. There are so many insane talents out there that I always felt under-qualified and still I do . But with this album thing I’m really having fun! I got live musicians on it from violin players to bass, guitar, piano and singers like Tekitha of Wu Tang Clan! But also a theater singer who I met on Twitter, an Australian female MC and more of that sort. My intention is to release the album and to release a remix album next to it with remixes by my close friends.
What three things are you are most fanatical about apart from music and why?
Oh, by far photography. I even make money off of it right now too. I do model/fashion photography and I love it. My goal is to one day make movies, that has been my lifetime dream besides music.
Your house is on fire and you only have time to save two albums, one current and one classic. Which would they be?
Bruv… all I am grabbing is my Macbook because then I’d have all my the Eagles albums, all my Stevie Wonder albums, all my Motown acapellas, all my Kanye West, John Legend, my Ilse de Lange, my house classics and my own logic files… trust me, most albums can be found by downloads so my worry’d be more on the laptop! VIVA MAC!
Do all Jaimies spell their name like you in Holland or are you just special?
My father is a bit of a weirdo. We all know that you spell it Jamie… but the dude wanted to keep it special and put the extra ‘i’ in there… you have no idea how many issues it gives with putting my name correctly in flyers, licensing, publishing information etc… it’s really, really annoying, ha, ha.
You can listen to Jaimie’s February mix on the Mad Decent blog, along with another free track, Suckaz They Dont Know. Beatport also has his brand new Mad Decent EP, What’s Happening To Ya.
You can still buy cue-jump tickets to see him at Chew the Fat! on Friday as part on the awesome Wearhouse Music line-up.
