From running the seminal Blue Room with Chris Coco, to being the driving force behind Bestival, to continuing to entertain and educate crowds all around the world, Rob kindly takes some time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions ahead of his appearance at Troublestock.....
The music you play and the sound that you are generally associated with gives the air of being very laidback. Would you say your life is as chilled as the music suggests?
I dunno if that's true. in clubs I play everything from disco to electro, techno and drum and bass. And on the radio I play from reggae and folk to happy hardcore and heavy metal. My life at the moment is as far from chilled as you could get - I'm expecting my second baby this weekend, have got a new festival launching in July, a new indoor festival Bandstand starting in May and a very busy record label, DJing schedule and two shows on Radio1 to do.. phew
Your Fabric live mix from 2005 was seminal in it's marrying of house tracks with more offbeat numbers. Do you find the music that you play is still a fair representation of this?
Yes totally, to me it's a completely natural mix. I cant listen to the same style for more than half an hour without getting bored.. I don't think humans are made to listen to just one sound so I try to mix it up as much as possible!
Are there any plans to improve on what's already being done with Bestival on the Isle Of Wight?
Well we always aim to get it better every year - greener, tidier, more fun and better! That's why we've launched Camp Bestival too so we can have a more relaxed family festival for us older dudes too
How have you found Radio 1 since the end of The Blue Room and the start of Sunday Best?
Since the Blue Room ended Radio 1 have give me more and more shows and shown more trust in me which is great... I absolutely love doing radio and our specialist DJ line up is the best in the world, no question!
What about taking over from Jo Whiley during the day on Easter Monday?
Loved it. Crowd liked the tunes and I just tried to forget I was broadcasting to 3 or 4 million people!
Did you find the reception you got was different from your more dedicated niche listeners?
Not necessarily but not all the listeners text or email in so its tricky to know exactly what people are making of it all!
And what three tunes are big for you right now?
Capitol K - Acid Favela
The Third Man - Fats Train To Edinburgh
The B52s - Funplex (CSS mix)
