EVIL NINE
Your debut album is seen by many as the first great breaks LP. How do you feel about this 'legacy'?
It was such an honor for it to be thought of like that but we didn't really consider the first album breakbeat at all really, to us it was just the sum of our influences which are hugely varied and always expanding. it was as much a hip hop album as it was a rock or electronica album or whatever, not fitting into any particular box has always been important to us. we like the danger in treading new ground and we thrive on the excitement of the unknown. The new album follows the same rule but with a whole bunch of other influences we've soaked up over time. don't worry we haven't gone off and made a ‘blog house' album or anything, it's very much the evil nine sound bought up to date. basically, we love it and are super excited about getting it out there.
In terms of albums that have come since from artists, are there any that have particularly stood out for you in terms of accomplishment?
El-p's 'ill sleep when you're dead' is a fucking prog-hip hop dystopian masterpiece, the justice album was a grower that lived up to the hype, both eagles of death metal albums were damn good rock and roll fun, midnight juggernauts 'dystopia' took the bits of vangelis that weren't shit and made good, daft punk's 'human after all' was by far their best album (the only good one if you ask me), both the bloc party records are timeless records that i'll love forever, the first half of tv on the radio's 'return to cookie mountain' was excellent but the other half was a bit shit really. im sure there are loads more but i can't think of them right now.
How do you feel your production work has developed since the release of "You Can Be Special Too"?
Fuck knows, im not sure really. i suppose its a lot more electronic cos we use a lot more analogue synths and less samples than before. we don't really subscribe to that ultra techy, anal style of production that so many dance artists seem to obsess over. we prefer to concentrate on the music and atmosphere of the track rather than spend days tweaking the same bassdrum, that shit just drives me nuts.
Can you give us a run down of what tunes are big in your box right now?
Nope! toms the dj around here & i don't know shit, im the quiet tortured genius of the duo.
Would you ever consider doing a concept album, and if so what style might it take?
Its funny you should ask that, lots of friends are claiming our new album ‘they live!' is a concept album. we didn't intend it to be but its turned out as a very heavily zombie themed album, we're big fans of italian electronic zombie movie soundtracks which has definitely shone through as one of the biggest influences. i was a big fan of zombie movies when i was a kid and just found my older brother made me watch ‘zombie flesh eaters' when i was eight whilst babysitting me. what a cunt!
Your love of live instruments is evident in both your production work and live shows. What do you find they bring to the table when compared with using a purely software based set up?
I suppose it adds a human element you dont get with a lot of sequenced music. the software shit is super-fresh and enables people to get music out there easier than ever before but you can get caught up in it and it all just becomes programming, it is music after all not computer club.
Away from DJing and production, how much time do you spend with each other?
We actually don't spend a huge amount of time together outside of evil nine but when we do they are golden moments to be cherished. we love each other like brothers but we spend so much time together in the studio and traveling that its nice to have a little break every now and then.
Are there any artists we should keep an eye on for the later half of 2008?
p: evil nine of course.
London or Brighton?
London and brighton.
And finally......assuming invsibility was off the list, what one super power would you like to have and why?
Most would choose to be able to fly, but thats all a bit too r kelly for me so it would have to be the power to bring the dead back to life. i could summon an army of the undead to crush the weak and the poor, that would be a hella lot a fun. less poor people in the world would be great as they have absolutely no taste and are sometimes very very rude.
