LISTEN TO THEIR LATEST MIX
As with all great partnerships, I have to ask - how did you meet?
Ah well that is a long story... I have been DJing professionally for 12 years and about 6 years ago I had just finished playing a set @ The Honey club in Brighton and my best mate Nicola said "There is someone you should meet, can we stop off at his house on the way back to London?" I was like "Yeah sure but..erm...it's 5 in the morning and well doesn't he sleep?" Anyway went to Izzy's house and he let us in and were introduced. I noticed that he had a pair of 1210s and said "ah you have decks what do you play?" Iz replied "breaks!" A rinse out of all rinse outs subsequently commenced and Caninesounds was formed!
Was it love at first sight?
Ha ha Yeah. Bit like the tune " and they call it puppy love " ... It took about 6 months to fine tune our back 2 back skills to a firm level and be able to work the crowd perfectly, but yeah guess we are like brothers really.
Do you find that coming from different musical backgrounds means you both bring something different to the table in terms of production?
Yes most definitely! With Sam's background in House & DnB and my background in Techno we cover all aspects of sound, the production side however has taken longer to gel as one of us lives in London and one in Sussex, but now its down to a tight formula and we are loving every beat, bassline & lead!
Your MySpace page has you down as Electro / German Pop / House. Is that an accurate description?
Well in this ever changing world of music especially the Breaks culture you have to stay flexible and be prepared to incorporate mixed genres into both your production and Dj sets I guess we incorporate everything from Thrash Metal to Folk Music with modern soft and hardware you can manipulate any sound so much, you just gotta dig deep.
How did you first become involved with Chew The Fat?
Well that is a very good question in about 2005 we both went up to Leeds for Technique with our good buddies Dylan Rhymes & Meat Katie where we were introduced to Rory (kid Blue). Time went on and with our radio show on Brighton's number 1 dance station Passion wit meant that we have guest DJs in for interviews and quest mixes, so we asked Rory on and he kindly obliged, from then on we were asked to resident for Off The Wall @ Ministry and so forth.
Chew The Fat is one of the few nights to take breakbeat to Ibiza. How do you find breaks go down in a predominantly house and trance setting?
Firstly we have to send massive thank you to head honcho of Chew the Fat and legend Paul Arnold for giving us the privilege and opportunity to play @ Space for We love Sundays. The lucky thing was the breaks had started to incorporate more genres in early 07 which meant that we could ease the breaks into our set! To cut a long story short they loved it - reports after said we tore the roof off , it was one in... one out in our room and on a percentage basis busier than Jeff Mills which was a nice and pretty weird!
What do you attribute the success of your radio shows to?
Ha ha to be honest hard work and loads of driving and of course the odd lucky break, way back in the day we were asked by Matt @ Samurai to interview Tom & Pat From Evil Nine on behalf of Fabric for their Fabric 28 CD comp and with that endorsement at that time the flood gates opened and Simon from Passion heard the interview and kindly asked us aboard.
Playing on both Passion and Samurai, do you find you have to tailor your sets differently for each station?
Yes we do with Samurai the shows are now more 1 off mixes, we used to do full shows but with joining passion and doing a live 2 hour show every week it is very difficult with studio commitments and an ever growing Dj schedule to fit it all in. Luckily the station bosses totally understand. With passion it is a show based around that weeks latest tunes and a guest mix from a Dj that we are working with that weekend, we have the crack and let people who are tuned in and or are k9 followers know what the weekend holds whereas Samurai is a culmination of the best tunes available for that particular mix.
Are there any producers or DJs that you've earmarked as ones to watch during 2008?
Ooh yes we get sent so many promos from so many labels that we are in the very lucky position of being exposed to some phenomenal talent, one for this year is definitely Bart B More, that's a Toolroom Traxx scouting, Rainer Weichhold & Format B from Great Stuff in Munich. Izzy's a big fan of Olivier Giacomotto and Swen Weber's doing it with some wicked tunes. DKS is also a top producer and one defiantly to watch out for this year, his Label [SIC] too which we have a release scheduled for mid 08, and of course us (hehe).
Any secret weapon tunes we can expect to hear at Chew The Fat?
Well we try to fit in as many of our own tracks as possible and recently we have made some proper filth, we have just been signed to Spinout so watch out for our remix of Lutzenkirchen`s Back in time, that is a weapon to end all Wars :)."
