Fresh from the huge success of his Warp EP on the legendary Digital Soundboy Records, Dismantle is undoubtedly one of the most exciting producers in the game right now, picking up huge support from some of the biggest DJs out there, such as Skream, Diplo, Annie Mac and Zane Lowe.
We caught up with the man himself in the run up to his set at the massive HENCH Takeover at Cable, London this Friday 21st September!
Dismantle, what have you been up to over the last few months since we last spoke to you?
Yo! I’ve just finished my first festival circuit this summer. Did around 10 festivals, and all of them were wicked! Apart from that I’ve been doing a lot of remixes. I did one for Toddla T, just finished one for Zinc & A Trak and working on one for Caspa. Been pretty busy with remixes but also have been building for my next single/E.P and have been collabing with Breakage (our track is forthcoming on his next release) and also Mensah/NYTA and Caspa to. People will be hearing them shortly!
In a pretty short space of time you’ve picked up big support from a whole load of big names. What’s it like having some of the world’s biggest DJs playing your tunes?
It’s amazing, it has left me speechless sometimes. I think it’s also how many different types of DJs have been playing it, like Radio DJs Annie Mac, Zane Lowe to DJs like Skrillex, Flux Pavilion, Skream & Benga, Diplo, to even people like Kode Nine. I never thought when i was making them tunes a while ago that a lot of big DJs would be playing them, so to have that much support in a small amount of time has been amazing and i thanks everyone who has ever supported a track of mine.
And how would you describe the music you make at the moment?
I’m really not sure. I leave that up to the listeners. It’s just a blend of everything ‘bass driven’ i guess. My stuff thats released and what people know me by is like fast dutch house with elements of dubstep and other UK genres. Recently I’ve been dabbling into other sounds and genres and just keeping myself inspired and happy in the studio.
In terms of your own musical style who have been your biggest influences?
Diplo, Major Lazer have been a big influence. Redlight has been a big influence to as his sound was so original and unique. Early Afrojack stuff was a big influence and dutch house artists like Angger Dimas have also inspired me to make what i make. I’ve always loved Skreams tunes, and when i first started out making dubstep i was always trying to make stuff like his haha. I have lots of other influences outside of my musical style to, I’m a massive Pink Floyd and The Who fan, as my dad used to always listen to them when i was growing up.
In the past year you’ve put out a load of top drawer dancefloor tunes, but what kind of music do you relax to, anything less upbeat?
I always listen to deep/tech house, not necessarily to relax to but when i’m driving and i always play it on Rinse FM and stuff. I listen to dub/reggae a bit and also listen to Jazz, and just try and keep an eye out for new music. There’s a radio station in Brighton called FIP, although its someone who has set up a transmitter somewhere around Brighton which gets the station signal from France (it’s a Paris radio station) and is pirated to Brighton. They play wicked music on there, all sorts. I listen to that quite a bit.
Can you tell us a bit about Gangoon Dubz, what’s the concept behind the collective…
We’re a collective consisting of Hizzleguy, Zauis, Redz, Hanz1, Hurley, 184, Bolger and myself. We started it around 4 years ago now and we started out just wanting our music to get heard and to be able to play out. About a year ago we started releasing music, and decided to release other peoples music to. We’re all just really good friends at the end of the day and that’s how it all started. Mate’s making music and getting it out there!
What does the next 12 months have in store for Dismantle?
The remixes I’ve been working on will be out soon. Expect another few Digital Soundboy releases, an Australian tour, hopefully a US tour and a load of gigs.
If you could put on your dream party, where would it be, who would play, and would there be a theme?
Haha tough one! Erm, I would have a late 80s / early 90s Carl Cox, Masters at Work, Pink Floyd, King Tubby (RIP) and also Paris Hilton just for the sake of amusement. This would have to be on a big boat. Nothing beats a boat party! And the theme would have to be favourite cartoon characters as a kid. That would be jokes!
What are your 3 ultimate tunes…
a) Club Killer
Gotta be Ray Keith – Chopper (Shy Fx remix)
b) Afterparty
Masters at Work ft. India – I Can’t Get No Sleep or it would have to be Crystal Waters – Gypsy Woman
c) Hidden Gem
My hidden gem which i’ve been playing a lot recently is Prodigy – Breathe. It goes OFF anywhere!
And finally, on September 21st we’re bringing the entire HENCH records crew together for a massive takeover event at Cable, with a few special guests such as yourself! What can we expect from your set on the night?
A bit of everything. I never play one genre in a set. Usually i have to mix it up depending on what i’m playing at but it usually goes down well! (i hope!) See you there!
