One of the most exciting talents to emergy from the UK underground over the past couple of years is undoubtedly Leon Vynehall, whose cultured and mature blend. 2013 has been a busy year for Leon, following the release of his 12″ for Well Rounded, his Brother / Sister 12″ for Aus Music which we championed a few months back and his collaborative Laszlo Dancehall EP with A1 Bassline for George FitzGerald‘s label Man Make Music.
Channelling his inner Levon Vincent with this latest release for Martyn‘s ever consistent vinyl imprint 3024, Leon demonstrates his growing maturity within a UK house and techno scene that’s become increasingly stale and predictable of late, especially over the past six months.
Opening track I Get Mine, You Get Yours is bang, bang on the money, with its uplifting yet spectral top lines and haunting vocal loops hitting an almost ethereal high at times and there’s absolutely no let up from start to finish. If this is where Leon plans exploring musically in the future, then we fully endorse it.
We’re calling Step Or Stone (Breath Or Bone) our favourite of the release, melting the sounds of early Boy 8-Bit and dear we say it Balearic poise of Kölsch with the stomping, shuffling percussion of Green Velvet. The punishing seven minute assault on the senses, still manages to force a big grin out of you.
Hitting the half-way point now and it’s time for a little breather. Third track I Know Your Face, Heroine might seem like a daunting prospect, but the four minute soother is just what we’re needing right now; shades of Greenville Massive and Youandewan on this one. Perfect.
Last up on the EP is the digital-only track XVII (Rox Out), another example of the tough, yet spirited direction Leon is taking the project and it brings this quite brilliant release to a close with real class.
Trust us when we say, this kid really has not put a foot wrong yet.
Leon’s Open EP is released on Monday 16th September and you can pick it up on 12″ or digitally via Surus here or Boomkat here and you can catch Leon playing for the start of our 15th Birthday celebrations happening at We Love… Sundays at Space in Ibiza on Sunday.
