For an artist who claims to have no formal musical training (besides a brief childhood tutoring of the violin), the Irishman known as Max Cooper is held in very high esteem by his brothers in arms. In between his recent achievements as a producer and DJ, in 2012 he was also voted #5 in Beatport’s top artists of year poll, noting his experimentalist approach to dancefloor production that has earned himself more than just a few fans; once also bagging him the title of “future hero” from the charming crew over at Mixmag.
One of those most avid followers is none other than larger than life legend, Sasha, who signed Max to his much loved label Last Night On Earth. To date he has notched up two EPs for the label, and as a consequence was asked to remix Sasha’s most well known classic, Xpander.
Max is also well known for his intelligent methodology when it comes to his production techniques… Splicing the science and mathematics of instrumentation and synthesis, with his unique and harmonious 4×4 grooves.
A curiosity with the science of sound was gained at a very young age; after reading a book by Stephen Hawking, he was inspired to study genetics and in 2008 he earned himself a Ph.D in Computational Biology. Smart guy !
We would certainly recommend listening to his Inflections EP to gain an insight into his approach.
Max’s fascination with combining science with his creative work doesn’t end with sound alone. Over the past few years he’s also merged this passion with creating a series of visual representations of his work with visual artist, Whiskas Fx.
Their collaboration was brought to life with Max’s Serie productions, something above all else we urge you to see.
We would also love you to check out his ace podcast for Resident Advisor from back in 2011, which is a great insight into the mind of the man and a little snapshot of the vibe to expect next week for his live set in the Discoteca.
Tickets are €40 or €20 (if you gain entry before 9PM) and can be bought from Ibiza Spotlight here.
